I may lead the site in screw ball ideas. I was negotiating a trade that involved Andrew Vaughn. The receiving team didn’t have a minor league spot. A part of Vaughn’s value is that he’s in a farm slot. Next season Vaughn will have to be activated. So what if we made it legal to trade farm player but keep them on the sending teams roster until the resealing team wanted to activate them or the end of the season.
Just as an aside... I’ve also dreamed of pulling off a three way trade, which I don’t believe has ever happened

I think this idea may have been brought up before in one of the other threads. I support it. We should have 5 farm slots at the time the minor league drafts have finished but the number can be increased only via trade during the season. A max of five can be frozen next year.

It appears to me that this would require a rules change. Currently rule 5.10.2 prohibits "future considerations" or anything else not explicit in the trade itself as a part of the trade. If a trade is made and the player identified now he would have to change teams. If he isn't identified now and is thus not explicitly part of the current trade any agreement to trade him later would be against the rules. Increasing the number of farm slots to allow for trades during the year would also involve a rules change. In either case I think any rules change made should occur after this season is over, not in the middle of the year. I would be more supportive of expanding farm slots via trade only, I don't want to see us open the can of worms involved in "future considerations."

I don’t think we should ever change rules in season. The player I was dealing with ended up activating Vaughn, but Vaughn would have had more for him next season if he remained on the farm. Could we allow teams to trade farm slots. I can’t refill my farm spot until next season and the player who acquired Vaughn can’t, under the present rules take full advantage of this trade.
Maybe the rule is some like. When farm players are traded, the farm slot is also traded to the receiving team for the rest the season. When freeze list are submitted the following season, teams are only allowed the usual 5 farm slots

I think trading the farm slot with the farm player solves another problem. Under the current rules as understand them you can acquire a farm player if you have a farm slot to put him in, but he wouldn’t necessarily be in the slot he was drafted in. Consider this scenario... the Lug Nuts acquire a farm player was originally drafted in the second round, but the Lug Nuts only had their 4th round slot. The following season the Lug Nuts activate the player in their 2nd round and the second round player they acquired remains on the farm. The question then is when do the Lug Nuts draft their new farm player?
If the farm slot is traded with the player all that will be cleared up when frozen rosters are submitted. You can freeze 5 farm players. While the slot on the freeze list doesn’t have to be the same as the slot he was drafted in, he wouldn’t get to pick in a round where he already had play who was originally drafted in that round
