Section 5 of the rules provides in part that "During Mocksports’ pre-season, no trades are permitted, no players may be waived, and FAAB rules (Section 5.9) will only apply to those players recalled or traded into the league after Opening Day rosters are set." If it is taken literally it apparently means that if an outstanding player is traded into the league after the draft, he can picked up on the cheap. It would be fairer to say that the FAAB clock starts running on any player traded into the league on noon of the day the commissioner announces that the 28 man rosters are all in. I see no justification not to allow each owner an equal chance. In fact, if I were the Commissioner (God forbid) I would apply my proposal this year in the absence of reliance by an owner who has already claimed the player (though I think the injustice of the rule outweighs the reliance interest). Alternatively, please tell me I have misread the rule.

Alternatively, please tell me I have misread the rule. I agree. We could probably fix it by changing "after Opening Day rosters are set" to "after auction rosters are set." My take on FAAB rules in general is that FAAB for all eligible players should begin at noon on Opening day and end 58 hours later, so this year at 10 PM on April 9.

Any player traded into the league after the draft would be subject to FAAB - end of story. If no one bids on them then yes they could get them on the cheap.
The FAAB monitors have been instructed to not to process FAAB bids until 4/9 at 10 PM which equates to our 58 hour window with the season starting on 4/7. Those traded in the period after the draft and up until opening day will be included in this pool of players being evaluated on 4/9 at 10PM.
Rules committee will look into tightening up the wording of the rule if anything is unclear.
Also, I believe the pre-season period originally meant the period from when the previous season ended until teams are renewed in the new season because we obviously allow trades once teams are renewed. Tacking on the FAAB language here is where I think it gets confusing.

Does the time when it is permissible to waive a player start when the commissioner says the rosters are all in (as I think the rules suggest) or noon on the 7th or something else.

I moved Steve's post from the other thread along with my post below it and then deleted the essentially duplicate post from this thread for clarity.

Noon on opening day (in this case the 7th) makes the most sense to me since it is automatic and would not require human intervention from the Czar or any other Mocksports staff.

FYI - I'm tuning out on these rules discussions until tomorrow as I have the Banks draft coming up shortly.

5.2 says After the Post-Auction Period but prior to the start of the MLB season, leagues will operate in “Pre-Season Mode”. Pre-Season will begin with the end of a league’s Post-Auction Period and end after all MLB Opening Day 25-man rosters are available from MLB.com, at a date and time specified by the Commissioner. I don't know if we have followed this rule in the past, but it is easy enough for the Czar to make an announcement just as it is easy for the Czar to announce that noon is a designated time. I would pick noon after opening day when most if not all rosters are in, LA's might have processed much of the pre-season transactions, and owners do not have to be looking for the Czar's announcement about the roster's being all in.
The disadvantages of picking noon opening day is that none of the rosters are in and many people will not see this change. Noon of either day is good for the FAAB change because an announcement can be made and there is more time to make bids- 58 hours rather than immediately after noon.

I think that the real MLB teams have to submit their rosters by noon on Opening day. Then it's just a matter of when OnRoto or MLB or whoever we decide to use publishes them so we can see them. I don't know how long ago this rule was written but if it was before easy internet access to rosters it's understandable that we might have wanted to use a different day at that time. I think we should call noon on Opening day the end of "Pre-Season Mode" but, if necessary, delay having LA's process transactions until we can see the rosters submitted by the real MLB teams. That delay shouldn't be more than 24 hours, probably somewhat less. Today I hope we can see them by this afternoon.
