We will be delaying our auctions and drafts until some time after the start of the season is announced.
After doing some reading on the subject, I'm leaning toward waiting until the season actually begins to have the auctions. In other words, say MLB announces that the season will start on Friday, April 8. We will schedule our auctions/drafts starting April 15. This way most of the free agents will be signed and we won't have a FAAB mess to start the season.
What does everyone think?

I agree that it's important to have most of the free agents signed but I'm not sure this means we have to wait until a week after the season begins for the first draft, two weeks for the last. Especially for the last few drafts scheduled that's too late into the season. Most if not all of the free agents should sign during the period of time before spring training begins or during spring training itself which is still, as of this moment, scheduled to last for 4 weeks. I think if we have most of the drafts during the last week of spring training and finish them about when the season begins we'll be fine.

I agree with Geoff.

I'm ok with the later the better for the drafts (even if it is after the season starts) because the later the drafts are also means the more time we have for submitting our keeper lists the three days before the draft (or whatever timeframe that is). But, of course I have a bad feeling about these labor talks lately and this all might be moot this year. I don't want to give up hope yet, but nothing surprises me anymore these days

That’s a tough one. I’m on the fence but leaning towards Geoff’s view of splitting the difference. I’m also concerned that we fill the leagues so whichever approach helps that the most is the one I want. My leagues are missing two and three owners at this time.

Since the season is officially starting on April 7, I vote with keeping the original draft dates.

Rick,
We need to wait a bit to see how the free agents start sorting out. I'll be putting up an auction/draft schedule tonight or tomorrow, probably the first week of April or so. I may shift Gibson Mixed to the week before since they are less league dependent.

Just thinking a bit outside the box here. As long as I've been around the draft schedule has always been pretty much the same - leagues draft on the same afternoon or evening every year, etc. Not sure how this began since it was in place before I was here. But since this year we're drafting during a different week and likely a different month, does it make sense to look at all parts of the schedule, especially in regards to when owners may or may not be able to be at the draft?

Have the keeper dates changed as well? The Bell league was today.

I'm going to put up a schedule according to how we've traditionally done it. If the owners all agree on an alternate date then we can move it assuming their is an auctioneer available.

If a free agent is signed after the freeze date and before the draft, in my opinion, the owner should be able to amend his freeze list. It would be helpful to agree on this before the draft. Also I am becoming concerned that the owners will not have sufficient time to prepare for the draft(s) if the vacancy issue forces cancellation of some leagues and last minute filling of other leagues.

All valid points. I like the idea of being able to amend the freeze list.
